AN inter-tertiary sports day, Te Wero Hakinakina, was a colourful day out for many at the Nita Shannon Courts and Eve Rimmer Park on Friday.
The event involved the four tertiary institutes within Whakatane – Anamata, Te Whare Wananga o Awanuairangi, Te Wananga o Aotearoa and Waiariki Institute of Technology.
The objective of the day was to encourage staff and students of the institutes to enjoy a social day of sports and whakawhanaungatanga (the process of establishing relationships and relating well to others).
The day was of a similar ilk to business house sports. There was a lot of laughter. Event spokeswoman Ngahuia Eruera said they received a lot of positive and supportive feedback and everyone is looking forward to next year’s event.
Eight teams entered the competition which began with netball, followed by football and finishing with touch.
Overall champions for the day were Te Wananga o Aotearoa 1. This was a team full of sports enthusiasts who were studying towards a Certificate in Sports, Fitness and Health. The team won the netball and football competitions, but were beaten by their number 2 team in the touch event.
Te Wananga o Aotearoa will host next year’s event.
