Racers on track for go-kart season

Wednesday, 28 July 2010
MEMBERS of the newly-formed ABOM Karting were in action in the Hawke’s Bay on Sunday.
Eight drivers from the club took part in round one of their winter series and also had a chance to pick up some new skills and refine some old ones.
Nick Eveelens spent the early part of the morning realigning his axle that he had bent the day before in practice.
The rest of the group set up their karts and walked the track ready for the day ahead.
Taryn Nielsen, in the cadets class, showed that the extra theory and practice from Saturday had been taken in. She scored second place in all races except one where she ran off out fuel.
This gave her and overall placing of third overall. She also placed second in the 12 laps Memorial Cup race at the end of the day.
Lachlan Vause, new to the cadet class, beat a Hawke’s Bay driver right on the finish line.
Eveleens and Wayvern Vause battled with the KT lights, as they were the only two KT heavies racing, They ended level at the end of the day to be first equal in the class.
Junior driver Matthew Eveleens found the track difficult with no practice the day before, and continued to spin on the sharp corner which had a small water puddle in the middle of it.
Tracey Nielsen had a ball in the racket class being only 0.1 seconds behind the  top Hawke’s Bay drivers and she managed to beat them in one race giving her a fourth  placing on the day.
Nielsen said she was stoked with her performance.
The ABOM club’s next race day is at Te Puke, where they hope to meet some of the Hawke’s Bay members again for some rematches.
