THE Whakatane Squash Club continues to make a name for itself with the announcement that the New Zealand championships will be held there in August.
It will be the second major tournament in 12 months after the club hosted the Oceania Masters on Labour Weekend last year.
The national tournament is shaping up to be bigger than the masters with 200 players expected to enter. The last time Whakatane hosted the event was in 2000.
Since club managers Graeme and Jill Randolph took over in July last year, the club has undergone massive changes including the opening of a pro shop and the implementation of a computerised court booking system.
The club has adopted a more open-door policy to the Eastern Bay community and has had increased membership. Ocean Ford is supporting the tournament and has naming rights for the event.
