Rowers on track for a big year

Friday, 05 February 2010
WHAKATANE rowers have had an ideal buildup to the national championships to be held next month.
Before Christmas Whakatane Rowing Club members had wins at the Karapiro Rowing Incorporated 1 regatta and they repeated their form at the KR2 at the weekend.
Harry Missen and Hayden Austin won their final in the boys’ under-17 double sculls. They also won the same event at the KR1. A new combination this season - Danielle Le Seur and Tracey Powley had a good win in the girls under-16 double sculls final
Aimee Burns-Mawson and Sharleen Murray won both the under-18 girls’ and women’s club double sculls finals comfortably.
A new crew in the boys’ under-15 quad crew had second placing. Most Whakatane crews made A or B finals at the regatta.
Murray was fastest qualifier, by a whopping 20 seconds, in the single sculls event but lightning forced the cancellation of the last hour of racing on Sunday and she didn’t get the chance to add to her earlier win.
On the horizon is the New Zealand Club championships in a fortnight at Karapiro and the secondary school rowers have North Island champs and the Maadi Cup to look forward to.
