THORNTON School is in desperate need of new computer equipment – and barcodes from Eveready torch and batteries packs.
The 100-pupil school is currently ranked second place in a national competition giving away a share of $40,000 of computer equipment, through having already collected 121 barcodes.
Power to Learn is a national initiative by Eveready which rewards New Zealand schools with computer equipment for collecting barcodes. The school that has received the most barcodes per pupil by September 3 will be given $15,000 worth of new computer equipment, and five schools will be donated $1500 worth of computers.
The programme is scored on a per pupil basis, to give every school an equal shot at winning regardless of size.
Principal Shelley Bremner said the school had been rallying support from the community, with many students bringing in barcodes from battery packs bought for smoke alarms during the daylight saving change, and through an Eveready battery fundraising initiative where the school cut holes in battery packs before selling the packs back to the community.
